Everyone online needs to protect their computer system. Not just from Viruses, other things too. Ad ware is a big problem and can slow your computer way down. I have seen some computers that were so loaded up with ads and pop-ups that it just became totally useless. I told them if it was mine I would just format the hard drive and start all over. The first thing that you can do to stop this from happening is to remove Microsoft's virtual machine in internet explorer. This is for Java scripts, doing this one thing has stopped 99% of this stuff getting installed on my computer without me knowing about it. I still want my computer to have Java software, so to do this I go to Sun micro systems and get the needed Java software there and Im done. So now I have Java software and my computer is safe from most of that kind of ad ware. Also I did all of this free. You will still need a program to keep your computer from getting spy ware and other bad things, I strongly suggest WebRoot software for this, Spy Sweeper. $20 for a year of protection will be the best money you will ever spend. If you have ever had a problem of this type, then I don't need to tell you how important this is. When your computer is down, you are down until you get it fixed. I know this for a fact and this helped me get back to work. I also use Avast anit-virus and I have found it to be very thorough and free for home use. I have upgraded Webroot to their anti-virus system, so now one scan will do the work of both aiti-virus and anti-spy. Just a note here: Never try to have more than one anti-virus program installed on your computer at one time. That will give you a problem and can damage your system. You can have more than one anti spy ware program. Remember to check your Fire Wall settings as well. Yes you can have more than one fire wall. If you have more than one you will just need to make more changes to open or close your ports, so if you add something that needs a port to connect with like "Skype" you may need to open both fire walls to connect. Yes it is more work but it is more secure. Chances are less likely an intruder could change both setting in two fire walls. Also you must use your common sense too. If something tries to install on your system and your program pops up and tells you about it, don't allow it to install, UNLESS you are doing it and you know what it is that is being installed. If you just say yes go ahead to something that you don't know about, the bug is in and well that is not the programs fault, it would be yours at that point. The program did its job by telling you about it, then you make the right choice, yes go ahead or stop. So if you are installing a program yourself it will pop up a warning just the same and you will just need to tell it "yes" and allow it. On the other end if you go to some website or open some E-mail and you get a warning that something is trying to do something to your computer, don't do it unless you know what it is first (be sure you know) I had a security breach from a file I downloaded from Skype ( I broke one of my own rules) my thinking was if this is something bad my systems will stop it or warn me that a change was trying happen "wrong" they did not and it was a bad mistake on my part. This happen so fast you will never know it, and they will have full control over your system. Well after that you can bet I'm just a little more careful with my security on my system now. (a lot more) I do not claim to be an expert in Security just learn all that you can about it and be careful out there. Some people have nothing better to do that just think of ways to beat our system we have in place and try to steal information from your system. Keep your systems updated all the time. Do things like change your passwords and don't stay logged into your e-mail accounts or have them set to auto log in for you when you open your browser. If you can just open your browser and check your e-mail they can too. Simple things like that can save you big problems. Remember if they (bad guys) can get in your system as far as anyone knows and can tell it is you doing whatever they do. It will have your IP address from your computer not theirs. You will be responsible for what ever they do. That is why this is so Important to know and not let your guard down even for a minute. Don't go looking for free ways to do this you could find yourself getting the very thing you are trying not to get. What better place to hide a trap, some site that gives you something you know you should buy or a free scan of your system, ask someone that knows, if your not sure.
